Each Inn of Court has its own unique history, traditions and social customs. They play a vital role in regulating barristers, providing training and education, fostering social connections, and preserving legal traditions while their history and continued relevance to the legal profession make them a fascinating aspect of England's legal landscape.
In the United States, the American Inns of Court was organized as a national nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the ethical and professional development of lawyers through numerous independently operated member Inns. These separate Inns, modeled roughly after their English counterparts, provide a forum for lawyers of all levels to come together, learn and share experiences, and are assisted with programming provided by the parent organization.
The National Inns of Court is modeled after the American Inns of Court but with key differences, that most noticeable of which is that participating attorneys are not charged fees and lay people are invited to join, as are vendors of various services. Independent National Inns are funded by the parent organization through sponsorships and fees collected from lay members and vendors. Also, there are no policy prohibitions such as would be necessary in a typical 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, as the National Inns of Court has not sought this exemption although it is operated as a not-for-profit.
